Ucluelet frequently asked questions

Is Ucluelet worth visiting?

Yes, absolutely! Ucluelet is known for its rugged coastline, stunning views, and wildlife (such as humpback whales, gray whales, bald eagles, and sea otters).

Ucluelet also has a vibrant arts and culture scene, with a number of art galleries, restaurants, and unique shops.

It's the perfect place to spend a couple of days, while you're exploring the Pacific Rim National Park, as well as the small town of Ucluelet itself.

Is Ucluelet nicer than Tofino?

Both Tofino and Ucluelet are beautiful destinations. Ucluelet is a bit less touristy and fractionally cheaper. That being said, I've visited both and really enjoyed our time in these quaint villages.

If you've got enough time in your Vancouver Island itinerary, I highly recommend visiting both Tofino and Ucluelet!

Are there bears in Ucluelet?

Yes, there are a lot of black bears on Vancouver Island and they're also present in the Ucluelet area. If you're planning a visit to Ucluelet, make sure to follow the safety guidelines for bear encounters.

What is the best time to visit Ucluelet?

Generally speaking, the best time to visit Ucluelet is between May and September. During this time, the weather is mild and the days are long, making it a great time to explore this beautiful part of Vancouver Island.

Personally, I feel June and September are the best months as it does get very busy during the summer months.

We visited in June and while we experienced the occasional cold night and a bit of rain, the weather was great overall and there weren't too many other tourists.

How to get to Ucluelet, Vancouver Island?

Ucluelet is located on Vancouver Island and you either have to take a ferry or a plane to get to the island.

By ferry

Ferry to Vancouver Island

From Vancouver, you've got several ferry options:

  • Horseshoe Bay to Departure Bay (4 km north of Nanaimo): 1 hour 40 minutes
  • Tsawwassen to Duke Point (12 km south of Nanaimo): 2 hours
  • Tsawwassen to Swartz Bay (about 30km north of Victoria): 1 hour and 35 minutes

You can find more information about BC ferries, their timetable, and prices here. I really enjoyed our ferry ride as it's a beautiful route.

If you're (very) lucky you may even spot a killer whale along the way (we didn't;-).

There are ferries from the U.S.A. to Vancouver Island as well, departing from Port Angeles and Seattle.

By plane

Both Victoria as well as Nanaimo have local airports and there are direct flights to and from Vancouver, Calgary, and Toronto.

For those looking to make a spectacular entrance, you can fly to Vancouver Island via seaplane as well, it’s only a scenic 20-minute flight from downtown Vancouver.

There's even a small airport in Tofino-Long Beach Airport (YAZ), though flights here are limited and usually very expensive.

How to get from the ferry/airport to Ucluelet?

Ucluelet is a 2h40min drive from Nanaimo and a 4h15min drive from Swartz Bay.

I highly recommend renting a car, it's the best way to explore Vancouver Island because it enables you to travel at your own pace and visit more remote locations.

You can also rent a campervan. Please note that campervans can only be rented in Vancouver.

If you are planning to stay in Canada for a longer period of time, consider buying a car instead of renting one.
